About swakopmund community

Swakopmund was our third Tutzing community in Namibia after Gobabis and Epukiro. Our first Sisters arrived at the coast in mid-December 1921. And settled in their new community in January 1922. They were: Sr. Agatha ROSS, OSB (Superior), Sr. Florentine WIRTHMANN, OSB, Sr. Heriberta SEITZ, OSB and Sr. Aurelia HAAG, OSB.

Initially, their main apostolate was care for the white sick people at St. Antonius Hospital in Swakopmund and in the cause of that year, two sisters went to serve the black people in the township (Werft), where they dedicated their service to educate the children. A second community was founded from June 1922 but this community was closed in 1950 and the sisters concentrated their effort to healthcare at St. Antonius. They worked tirelessly to develop the hospital. It became very famous in the whole town of Swakopmund.

As time went on, the Sisters grew old, and some died, and those who remained were no longer able to manage the hospital. It was therefore closed in 1985 and the building was turned into a residence for old people. In 1986, the Sisters moved into a house near the former hospital.

Currently, our apostolates in Swakopmund community are prayer, assisting the poor especially the street beggars, the families and the students. The Sisters are actively participating in Holy Rosary Parish by giving communion to the homebound, in nursing home of elderly as well as assisting in the sacristy of the parish church of Holy Rosary. We also give basic catechetical instruction at Bethany house in Mondesa and most of all we are caretakers of our new St. Scholastica Guest House at ocean view.
