On 19th June 1930, Fr. Franz MARX, OMI, Bro. Georg RUSS, OMI and Brother Karl SALMS, OMI arrived in Shambyu from Nyangana Mission where they had been learning Gciriku since February of the same year. Seven years later, on 16 August 1937, the first Tutzing Sisters arrived in Shambyu: Sr. Bonita WOHLMANNSTETTER, OSB and Sr. Erwina DIET, OSB and on 7 October Sr. Leopoldine MÜHLBUAER, OSB joined them. She was a trained teacher, so she took over the administration of the mission school and was its principal and matron for the hostel for many years. The school at Shambyu was always praised by the school inspectors for having well-disciplined learners.
In August 1949, Sr. Hadelina MITTERMEIER, OSB, who was a trained nurse, arrived in Shambyu and became engaged in the health service. As there was no doctor in the area, she had to make the diagnosis and treat the patients with the simple means that were available to her. The Catholic Health Centre at Shambyu was built in 1950 and a proper clinic was constructed in 1956 by the Mission. The government provided most of the medicine free of charge. Sr. Hadelina, OSB, became quite famous. The people gave her the nickname “Sosta Kandjonga”.
Due to lack of personnel, Tutzing sisters withdrew officially from this mission in 1989 and Oshikuku Sisters took over. However, with the turnout of the events, Shambyu came once again under the jurisdiction of the Windhoek Priory from 1999 to present, engaging in different apostolates such as: Prayer, assisting the sick, especially those in the villages that cannot reach the hospital by themselves. The Sisters offer their car to go and take them to the hospital. Another apostolate is to supervise girls’ hostel, teaching prayers and songs to the children and they are in-charge of the parish church.
