About Namatundu community

About Namutuntu is an isolated and quiet place on the banks of the Kavango river in northern Namibia on the border with Angola. As early as 1928, the Lutherans of Mpungu Mission, some 30km further west, had started an outstation at Namutuntu with a school and a clinic. But they left the place during the so-called border war when the South African army fought against the Swapo guerrillas. The school and a clinic then became the property of the government. The villagers longed to have missionaries come back, regardless of which denomination. Their request was answered when Oshikuku Sisters looked for a place in the area. Sr. Agrippina ASHIPALA, OSB, who was at that time the Superior General of Oshikuku Congregation, sent Sr. Erwina FRANS, OSB and Sr. Jovitha PENEAS, OSB, to investigate. On 08 November 1987, they met the King at Nkurenkuru who gladly offered them a plot at Namutuntu. The place was officially given by Hompa Daniel SITENTU, Chief of the Vakwangali tribe to the Sisters in 1988. community

On 14 June 1996, Namutuntu became legitimately the property of the Tutzing Congregation. Two years before, the huts which had served as chapel, refectory and community room respectively, had been completely renovated. Older huts were demolished and a completely new convent was built with bricks in 2000. One hut, which was used by Archbishop Boniface Haushiku when he visited Namutuntu, was turned into a prayer room, dedicated to his memory in 2014. The faithful are welcomed here pilgrims and time to pray. The Sisters in Namuntuntu community do apostolates such as: Prayer, assisting in the church by teaching catechisms and preparing candidates for Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, helping parishioners in their different groups e.g. the youth, Legio Maria, Catholic Woman Organization. The Sisters have a Kindergarten as well as do gardening. In 2024, they opened a girls’ Hostel where the accommodate children who go to the nearby government school.
