About Ongha community

Ongha is situated in the far north of the country about 30km from the border to Angola. The catholic community was established in 1962 through the leadership of Meme Theresia HISHINDA. In 1990, a large church was built together with a priest’s house. The church was consecrated by Archbishop Bonifatius HAUSHIKU. Already in 1992, the Archbishop had asked the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing to open a convent at Ongha, but lack of personnel made this impossible at that time. However, the Archbishop’s wish was fulfilled on 17 July 1996, when the following sisters arrived: Sr. Anatolia ARUGODHI, OSB (Superior), Sr. Eufemia AMESHO, OSB, Sr. Juliana MHUKWEETELE, OSB and Sr. Maria Kredula KANGULOHI, OSB.

Since there was no priest in Ongha, the Sisters were able to reside in the priest’s house until their convent building was ready in 1998. Although it was in the middle of the school year, the Sisters did not hesitate to open a kindergarten which started on 20 July 1996 under the trees. Eighteen children showed up in the first weeks but the number had increased to 71 at the start of the new school year. In 2000, the Windhoek Priory was able to gather enough funds to build the kindergarten at Ongha. It was named after St. Scholastica. The Sisters in Ongha are doing apostolates of Prayer and teaching at St. Scholastica’s Kindergarten. They also help the people by teaching them needlework, baking bread at times as well as how to make rosaries and flowers. They teach catechism for different sacraments, and preach the word of God as they go out with the priests to translate. They visit prisoners, they organise different groups in the church such as Bloukring and Jongwag, Legio Maria and St. Joseph group for men. In 2025, the built a small hostel to accommodate children who come from far for kindergarten.
