Tondoro Mission was founded on 13 May 1927 by Fr. Gregor WEILHÖFER of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate and it is still staffed by them. The first two Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing, Sr. Fulgentia DÖRFLER, OSB and Sr. Germana FISCH, OSB arrived in 1934; other members followed later.
They built three huts: two for the sick who can stay for some time and one for the treatment of the outpatients. As at every Mission Station, a school with a hostel was also built at Tondoro, too. Over the years, about 35 small communities were founded from Tondoro.
After 40 years of service at Tondoro Mission, the Tutzing Sisters handed over their mission activities to the Oshikuku Sisters because their numbers had dwindled. On 20 September 1977, the last two Tutzing Sisters, Sr. Reginalda WEIS, OSB and Sr. Erwina DIET, OSB, left Tondoro for Windhoek and Swakopmund respectively. In August 1999, when a large group of Oshikuku Sisters were integrated into the Tutzing Congregation, Tutzing Sisters returned again to Tondoro.
The Sisters in Tondoro community administer the Health Centre of the Mission and do other apostolates in the clinic and in the community such as: Prayer, health care programs, work in the maternity for pre and post-delivery, attend to the inpatient and outpatient, do the dispensing of medicine. When there are student nurses for clinical attachments the Sisters attend to them as well as assist the cooks in the Health Centre kitchen. Other activities include: sacristy, gardening and taking care of a few chickens. In Tondoro there is project of helping the San people by teaching them needle work.
