The Roman Catholic Mission of Bunya was founded in 1929. Three years later, in 1932, the first Tutzing Sisters arrived: Sr. Irmina PAULY, OSB (Superior), Sr. Aurelia HAAG, OSB, Sr. Bertholda ASAM, OSB and Sr. Pirmina FLECK, OSB. They started working with the sick and the youth. In November 1935, a small building was erected with two rooms, one serving as pharmacy and the another as a room for patients. Later, the sisters started a school and the hostel. Fruit trees were planted as water was plenty from the river nearby.
The Sisters were getting old and their number diminished, the school was handed over to the government while the hostel and the Health Centre remained the property of the Mission. In 1994, it was decided to hand over Bunya Mission to the Oshikuku Sisters. However, when half of the Oshikuku Sisters joined the Congregation of Tutzing Sisters, Bunya came, once again under the care of the Tutzing Congregation in 1999. In Bunya community the Sisters are doing apostolates of: Prayer, administration of Bunya Health Centre and have different projects, for instance women groups for Shihetekera Bakery and for piggery, different health care programs such as: outreach, expanded immunization, give anti retro viral treatment and do human immune deficiency virus testing, and all other clinic related activities. In the Church they assist also in different groups such: “Maria Kind” group, give Catechism for different Sacraments and do Sacristy duty.
