About Okongo community

The history of Okongo community started in 2013 when the Archdiocese of Windhoek asked the Prioress of Windhoek, Mother Maria Ignatius GLASER, OSB, to send Sisters to Okongo to do mission work. With the approval of the Generalate, the Priory Government only agreed in 2016 to open a new house at Okongo. Sr. Beate SCHRÖTER, OSB, was appointed as superior of this new foundation, which at that time was still under construction. When the buildings and the new church were ready, Archbishop Liborius Ndumbukuti NASHENDA, OMI, handed over the keys of Okongo Mission to the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing in January 2017.

On 01 March 2017, Ash Wednesday, the Sisters moved into their new house at Okongo. The pioneering group was made up of: Sr. Beate SCHRÖTER, OSB (Superior), Sr. Wilma THEOPHILUS OSB, Sr. Angeline ARCEO, OSB, Sr. Emma AINDONGO, OSB (Junior Sister) and Sr. Hildegard KANDJIMBI, OSB (Junior Sister).

Okongo with its five small outposts used to be visited only once every three months by the priest from Ongha. Because there was no resident priest at Okongo, the Sisters immediately began to visit families, organized catechism classes for children and arranged prayer services. On 13 January 2018, the Sisters started teaching in the Mission Kindergarten. About 50 children were registered for the first year. Today, in the community of Okongo Mission, the Sisters participate in the community Prayer life of Ora et Labora; run the Mission Kindergarten and Pre-school, do pastoral work in the Mission Parish, help in the preparation of the children and adults for the Sacraments and the Liturgy; they do home visits especially to the San people who are in want of basic needs. The Sisters also have a small poultry and are in-charge of the Dormitory for accommodating some visitors who want an overnight stay in Okongo Mission.
